This work was commissioned by the Carnegie Institute and the Pennsylvanie College for Women for the 1952 Pittsburgh Contemporary Music Festival. It was afterwards chosen to be performed at the XXVIIth Festival of the International Society for Contemporary Music – Oslo 1953.

    This is a great piece, however this edition has not one fingering. This is extremely problematic, [...].

    written in 1952, this sonata represents one of the most significant works by ginastera and has long been established in the modern piano repertoire. Set in four movements, ginastera takes full advantage of the piano's beautiful sonorities... highly recomended for the enterprising pianist with a strong, powerful technique.
