A collection of prose poems by the French Romantic Aloysius Bertrand inspired Ravel to write his piano cycle Gaspard de la nuit. Unlike earlier works he does not merely create an atmospheric depiction of the literary model – in a fascinating manner he recounts the eerie-grotesque scenes using musical means. His “three romantic poems of transcendental virtuosity” were supposed to surpass the technical refinement of Balakirev's Islamey (HL 51480793), which was considered unplayable at the time. Our edition not only offers impeccable Urtext in a clear, larger format: the corresponding poem by Bertrand prefaces each part in three languages.

Excellent
As usual, the Henle editions are easy to read, with extensive comments and notes. I got this just for Ondine, which is easier than it looks once you realize the patterns and start to understand the melody and voicing. I also think it's easier than Jeux d'eau and Une barque sur l'ocean, but there is a lot more hands-on-top-of-each-other action in this piece. It is very fun to play. Each piece is also preceded by the poem that each song is based on. Maybe sometime later in my lifetime I will attempt Scarbo...

A real challenge for the music lover
If you are contemplating playing this music, even in private, you have attained a good comprehension of keyboard dexterity and musical intuition. Expect long months of hard study, and consequently a lifetime of enjoyment from one of the most difficult, yet rewarding pieces of music ever written. Study the logic and the poetry behind it, and you will get a fuller picture of what Ravel tried to express through it. As usual, Henle Verlag editions are the best: a true pleasure for the eyes and a model for others to follow.

Excellent
I would recommend this, since it is well printed. However, I like the Wiener Urtext Edition better.
