The piece is packed with technical challenges and requires superb dexterity and advanced technical ability throughout, this especially in the outer movements. The first movement begins with a rather alarming introit, with jarring, banged-out chords proceeded by rapid scale-like patterns in both hands. This idea repeats throughout the piece in various places. Following this introit however the music shifts gears into a bouncy, cheerful theme, with an intense middle section. The second movement is slower, and is quite melancholy. It's somber, broken theme depicts deep sorrow and regret. The final movement is a sort of make-shift rondo, with a light and cheeful theme and calmer middle section.
