Sonata no. 2 in F major is a solo piano work written for the advanced pianist. It is in the classical sonata style. The piece is packed with technical challenges and requires superb dexterity and advanced technical ability throughout, this especially in the outer movements. The first movement begins with a rather alarming introit, with jarring, banged-out chords proceeded by rapid scale-like patterns in both hands. This idea repeats throughout the piece in various places. Following this introit however the music shifts gears into a bouncy, cheerful theme, with an intense middle section. The second movement is slower, and is quite melancholy. It's somber, broken theme depicts deep sorrow and regret. The final movement is a sort of make-shift rondo, with a light and cheeful theme and calmer middle section.
