The Seikilos Epitaph is widely regarded as the oldest surviving complete melody, dating back to the 1st or 2nd century AD. The epitaph, discovered on a tombstone near modern-day Aydın, Turkey, includes both musical notation and lyrics in ancient Greek. It offers a rare glimpse into the modal and lyrical aspects of Greek musical tradition, highlighting the intersection of cultural, artistic, and historical elements. This is an original free reinterpretation of the piece. It includes an introduction, the main theme, two variations, and a solo improvisation in the Mixolydian mode, offering a contemporary exploration of this ancient melody.
