Composed by Darius Milhaud. Edited by Maurice Hinson. Masterworks; Piano Collection. Alfred Masterwork Edition. 20th Century; Masterwork. Book. 48 pages. Alfred Music #00-21438. Published by Alfred Music (AP.21438).
ISBN 9780739029718. UPC: 038081204741. English.
Milhaud's recollections from his nearly two years in Rio de Janeiro (1917-18) compelled him to compose this series of poetic dances---each capturing the unique charms of Rio's different districts, and reflecting the mood and atmosphere of Brazil. Influened greatly by tango rhythms, these dances are original, and not based on Brazilian folk tunes. Acclaimed music historian and authority Maurice Hinson has meticulously edited this new edition of Milhaud's Saudades do Brazil based on the first printed edition.

Polytonal Brazil
Milhaud's polytonality is so relentless that one longs to hear the agreeable melodies with accompaniments in the same key! But one does get used to the sour harmonies, and the result is surprisingly like some of the music of Villa-Lobos. A lot of variety even if all the pieces are in 2/4 with practically the same rhythm. For this music, big hands are helpful for the wide stretches needed. Good, clear publication, helpful editing, a few apparent typos with accidentals (though in this music it's hard to be sure).
