Composed in 1971, George Crumb's 'Vox Balaenae' ('The Voice of the Whale') for 'electric' (amplified) flute, cello, and piano was inspired by recordings of whale song and considers, in typically theatrical manner, man's relationship to nature. Crumb invites the performers to play wearing black half masks under blue lighting if possible. A contemporary music classic, this Edition Peters score is notable for its presentation of Crumb's famous calligraphy. Three scores are required for performance.

I would like to add and information, that this piece is written for 3 MASKED PLAYERS IN THE BLUE LIGHT!!! This makes it even more cool. And really its worth of performing. I'm really disappointed, how lack of attention in cetral europe has this kind of music.

  • October 29, 2007 Gorgeous, but challenging

Crumb's Vox Balaenae is a gorgeous chamber piece for amplified flute, cello and piano (listed in the score as "electric flute," etc.). There are definitely some challenges: the flautist must sing and play at the same time, the cello is retuned, the pianist plays harmonics and muted notes (and...

must play using a metal chisel, too); some of the players are asked to whistle as well. All of these challenges are worth the effort!

  • March 17, 2006 WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was absolutly insane (a good one that is). It is just so wow. It has so much depth and you need to practice or you probly won't be able to play. My class also agrees with what I say. It teachs you that playing the flute is harder...

than you or they think. It takes so much time but it is VERY worth the time!

  • November 26, 2005 amazing!

this is one of my top ten favorite pieces of all time! Crumb is a genius in my book. he uses all the sonorities that you could think of in this piece. the last movement is especially beautiful and haunting with its whale- like melodies.
