This landmark edition, by Barry Cooper, satisfies the exacting requirements of performer, teacher, and scholar. It is totally faithful to Beethoven's music text, corrects long-standing errors and misconceptions, and includes the latest research from Cooper, a world authority on Beethoven. Unlike other editions, the complete 35 sonatas are included, beginning with WoO47 Nos.1-3. For the performer or teacher, there are realized ornaments, suggested fingerings, sympathetic page turns and layout -- all beautifully presented -- and an Introduction on performance practice, articulation, dynamics, pedalling, etc. Every sonata comes with a critical Commentary, including the work's history, a full assessment of the sources, and detailed notes on interpretation. Available as three separate volumes, and as a boxed set.

Boxed set (all three volumes in a slipcase).

I would have given this edition 4 or 5 stars if it were not for the binding. Before I bought it, I had read other reviews, and thought that they must be exaggerating. They were not exaggerating: not only will the books not stay open, they won't even open...

flat, which makes it difficult to read the notes within a couple of inches of the inner margin of each page. That said, it does have some very useful features: serious commentary, and CD's demonstrating the same music played on a fortepiano vs a piano. It's a good study score, but not a performance score, because of the binding. It was an expensive set, and for the price, it seems to me they could have bound it better (I have their old Tovey edition, and its binding is lovely).

I grew up with the ABRSM Tovey edition, as recommended to me by my teacher. It was an expensive investment and remains an excellent resource. ABRSM Cooper is now an edition of choice. Highly recommended.

This edition of Beethoven Piano Sonatas edited by Barry Cooper are great. The engraving, fingerings, performance suggestions, etc are all great. But what I am a little dissapointed about is how they can get ruined easily. The covering is quite thin and has a sort of plastic film that has...

started to fray on mine. These would be perfect if they were cloth-bound/hard-covered! Also they dont stay open on upright pianos. They do on grand pianos, but not everyone has one!
