Lovely arrangement. Had to work on fingering to ensure a nice flow, and am getting there. Simple but beautiful.

  • December 07, 2012 Somewhat awkward to read

I wish there were something like a Henle edition of this -- this one is a little crowded, and given the complexity of the counterpoint, that's a problem. But the piece warrants the effort required to read it. Like the Petri "Sheep May Safely Graze," the Hess "Jesu Joy of...

Man's Desiring" is a wonderful thing, if not totally Bach, and can be heard on Fleisher's "Two Hands" CD (as well as elsewhere.)

  • January 14, 2012 Intermediate players: Go for it!

Sadly, much of Bach's piano work is for the advanced pianist only. However, with diligent work, an intermediate player can fully master this exquisite little gem of a transcription. It's all in the fingering of the right hand. No fingering comes with the music, a blessing as it...

turns out, because the fingering will be quite different for small or large hands. First off, be patient. Take the time to figure out the complex fingering that's correct for your size hands. Carefully pencil the fingering into the music *before* you start to practice. Then spend the many hours necessary to learn your fingering. When frustrated, search youtube.com performances to be inspired, or google for midi files if you're on an electronic keyboard. You'll get it right when you follow the old adage: first play the notes, then play the music. Remember this is the version the Pro's play in concert, and how often can an intermediate sound like a Bach professional? Hang in there - here's your chance.
