  • November 07, 2019 Great Beginner Flute Book

Used this book in my flute techniques class in my undergrad and it was great. Moves at a good pace. Doesn't move too slow, but also doesn't leave the student in the dust. Great book for class or for private study.

  • July 20, 2014 Excellent beginner flute resource

I have a select short list of beginner flute instruction materials I choose from depending upon the student's age level and personality. This is a new book to me, and will now be one of my regular options to draw from for future beginner students. Good systematic progress on...

flute player and music reading aspects. Very good dose of duets present (which is a plus to me over other books).

  • October 10, 2013 Best pedagogically complete method

As a private teacher, I fully recommend this complete and pedagogically sound book. It's full of duets, which are essential for early musicianship development, and includes several musicality studies and tips. I've found that it's right on as far as pacing goes, and does a very thorough...

job of introducing new concepts and cementing them before moving on. Students start very early with tone studies such as harmonics, which leads to much better control later on. The first notes learned are stable, and the Bb keys are explained and practiced appropriately. The approach to vibrato is refreshingly sensible. The only suggestion I don't like is their method for learning rhythm, but I just teach my own method and there are no problems. In the hands of a good teacher, this is probably the best holistic beginner method out there. In addition, it works wonderfully as a review for more advanced students and as a source for studying musicality for those students.
