Collected from several sources, these teaching pieces were published separately in the 18th and 19th centuries as the Twelve Short Preludes and the Six Short Preludes. Students are often introduced to these works prior to studying the Two-Part Inventions (Alfred Edition 22528). This unique edition includes the realization of ornaments and guidance concerning tempos and articulation. The Alfred Masterwork Library CD Editions conveniently combine each exceptional volume with a professionally recorded CD that is sure to inspire artistic performances.

Pianist Kim O'Reilly Newman holds a Master of Music degree from the University of Illinois. She has performed throughout North America and Europe with the Hambro Quartet of Pianos and was an editor and recording pianist for Alfred Music. Kim is a brain tumor survivor and now specializes in performing music for the left hand.

This is a terrific book. I'd never heard these pieces, and even though they are student exercises they are good to listen to, fun to play, and even suitable for church preludes. The price is good for the book alone, so the CD is a nice bonus.

  • August 21, 2012 you must keep this in stock!

(These pieces may be "easy", but their technical demands are significant.) As I write this, I see that you have only one copy of this book in stock. I hope this is the case because it is flying off the shelf!---I so appreciate the user-friendly size and generally...

scholarly thoroughness of Alfred editions. I had worn out my old oversize Kalmus edition of the preludes (which is no longer in print) and despaired of ever finding these wonderful works presented together again, until I saw that this Alfred edition was available. Thank you so much.

Charming selection of easier pieces with helpful fingerings. I love this book, as it is full of relatively unknown gems.

    W. Palmer yet again does a great job documenting these classic Bach pieces. Characteristic of any Palmer editions, the fingering, phrasing, dynamics are conveyed in great detail along with suitable editorials where there's a deviation from the original or in comparison with other collections. Nicely printed and, although staple...

-bound, the cover and pages seem durable for many years of playing. They may appear innocent looking at first, but if properly played they are really intermediate-to-advanced pieces. This is by far the best rendition of the 18 preludes I've come across, and you must get the edition with CD! Good luck!
