It has now come full circle for me, because I originally sketched it out as a piano piece, as a guide to composing the full flute ensemble score.
The flute choir version has been performed at concerts in every season: Spring, summer, fall, winter. Thus it is not strictly a cold-weather-concert piece.
This piece celebrates the sparkling joy of winter: the shimmering diamonds on the ground on a snowy evening, the colorful blustery swirl of misty snow in the air, the tingle of the scent of winter! Performed in a lively manner, it highlights this joy; performed slower, it gives a soothing and meditative feel to the ambience of - a winter's journey.
