The two movements of the Sonata form a strong contrast and thus unite the multifaceted style that so characterizes the works of John Mitchell. The first dance-like movement is influenced by popular music styles of the late 60s and embodies the bright and light element. It acts as an introduction to the longer second movement, that is inspired by accents of folk-music, but mainly classically oriented. It appears as a variation movement, where the successive sections don't follow , but build within each other. The sonata concludes with a slow coda as a final variation leading to a strong g-minor chordal ending.
