Dass die Sonate damals keinen Verleger fand, lag zunachst an der Jugend Busonis, spater an seinen veranderten asthetischen Prinzipien, die ihm andere Stucke als wichtiger erscheinen liessen. Das jetzt als Erstdruck nach dem Autograph in der Deutschen Staatsbibliothek Berlin vorliegende Werk prasentiert einen charakteristischen Losungsversuch des Sonatenproblems und lasst durchaus Vorbilder wie Bach, Beethoven und Brahms erkennen. Dennoch finden sich stark eigenstandige Zuge wie die erheblichen Anforderungen an die Spieltechnik oder harmonische Wendungen, die weit uber Wagner hinaus in die Moderne weisen. So gilt die f-moll-Sonate als exemplarisch fur eine bestimmte Schaffensperiode Busonis, den Eduard Hanslick damals als ,,ein noch in voller Garung begriffenes Talent bezeichnete.
