This piece is a depiction of the northern lights. The text references myths from Greek, Finnish, and French traditions. The voices often depict the lights themselves, with their ever-changing colours and textures in the sky. By contrast, the accompanying saxophone quartet often depicts the wind—I imagine an observer looking up at the lights over a mountainous, windswept snowscape. With eight vocal parts, dissonant harmonies, and close voicings, this is a difficult piece. A string quartet would probably serve as well as a saxophone quartet for the accompaniment, and might be easier to find.
This work won Second Place in the Audi Summer Concerts composition competition in 2025.
