The melody is in Mode II (Dorian) of C major scale (D to D). It is first accompanied with arpeggiated chords in the middle piano range, imitative of a string instrument. A variation of the harmony then occurs with righthand eighth notes and lefthand chord roots in a half and quarter note pattern in the same range. The melody is finally stated with partial chords accompanied by left hand arpeggios to support strong dynamics. The ending consists of short melodic phrases with arpeggiated chords and chord variation, a reference to the first two statements of the melody.
