What would “O Come, All Ye Faithful” sound like if Sergei Rachmaninoff composed & performed it on the piano? Michael Maw decided to take up this challenge and compose a brand new version of this old Christmas carol back in 2017. First, it needed to have a more melancholy tone (so switching to minor key was an obvious choice). Next, it must have lyrical melodies, rich sonorities, and virtuosic elements. Rachmaninoff’s music often has a sense of longing & peace in it, so Michael tried to capture both of those feelings in this composition. Skill level: Advanced Intermediate. 6 pages.
