During the 1770s, J.J. Hummel, a music publisher in Amsterdam, published a pirated edition of Johann Baptist Vanhal's popular Symphony in D minor. In this edition, the middle two movements were thrown out and replaced with a slow movement for string orchestra. I have taken this movement for string orchestra and basso continuo and arranged it for solo keyboard. The primary thematic material is based on a simple downward lilting gesture. This lilt is sweetened with parallel falling thirds later in movement. This contrasts against the insistance of the secondary melodic material and creates a formal structure that exists between binary form and a rudimentary sonata form.
