Hymn tunes often spring to life with the introduction of a new timbre, such as the violin, but it is often difficult to know how or where to utilize the addition. These collections solve that problem and give violinists the opportunity to enhance the music of the church, whether it be a featured number, or an unscheduled addition to a congregational hymn. Well-suited to the average violinist, these obbligatos are flexible and may be performed as solos, accompanied by any typical hymnbook harmonization, as violin duets, or as accents to congregational singing. Where several keys are standard for the same hymn tune, all have been included. The scope and versatility of this collection make it a "must have" for all church violinists. Volume 1 includes DIADEMATA, LYONS, LOBE DEN HERREN, ADESTE FIDELES, HYFRYDOL and 57 other seasonal and standard hymns. Volume 2 includes SALVATIONIST, CONVERSE, NETTLETON, HIGHERGROUND, BETHANY and 32 other traditional, early-American gospel songs.

This collection is wonderful for congregational accompaniment of hymns! The obbligatos are intermediate to advanced level. Do check the key of your hymnal version. Sometimes the obbligato is in a different key.

Violin Hymns and Obbligatos, Vol. 2 is well worth the purchase price for anyone looking to expand the usual melodic line of the typical church hymn. I would classify the material as intermediate, as the range stays in roughly third position or below, with few exceptions, and the rhythms are...

not intricate. Several of the hymn/obbligato combinations are written in two keys. This is helpful for players who are more comfortable playing in certain keys, though you could also learn to transpose them yourself. I just played "For the Beauty of the Earth" in church (I play violin). I played the obbligato part and a flute playing friend played the melodic line. We had no accompaniment, but the beauty of the duet didn't need it, and the congregation appreciated the change of pace from piano accompanied hymns. Am looking forward to purchasing the other two volumes.
