  • November 23, 2017 Fingering

So many people draw attention to the absence of fingering. Knowing the scale/s for the piece will solve the problem.

For Mozart get a good edition; Beethoven, it must be something exceptional. With Haydn, everyone has their own ideas about ornamentation. So get some up to date recordings and pencil the realizations into your Dover edition!

  • January 06, 2011 Good and cheap, but not the best

This edition is basically a urtext edition of Haydn's sonatas. There are a few dynamic, phrase, and articulation markings. It is in two volumes and is a good price. However, it would be useful to have fingerings. Paying for three Henle volumes to get Haydn's complete sonatas is...

prohibitive for most people, so I won't recommend that. A comparably (actually slightly lower) priced Schirmer edition has fingerings and more editorial markings, however because I don't own this edition I couldn't say if the editorial markings are excessive. The Alfred edition is edited by the well-respected Maurice Hinson, so I imagine it is very good. However, this edition is more expensive as it is in three volumes. This Dover edition is good for someone that wants and edition that is inexpensive and true to the composer's original intent. However, if you want fingerings but are wary of Schirmer, I would try the Alfred.

Great price. No fingering, sort of like an urtext edition. The binding is a little stiff but manageable. I was happy with it.

  • October 11, 2007 Haydn was no Mozart

Haydn wrote Piano Sonatas - so did Mozart and Beethoven. Haydn was pretty good - Mozart and Beethoven were superb. What more can I say?
