As the adult reflects on the bright and carefree days of his or her childhood, inevitably, these reflections become colored by hitherto extraneous, un-childlike sentiments such as nostalgia and a pervading sadness brought on by the realization that those days are now lost forever. In Childhood memories, the recollections of moments and events in the child’s life are presented almost chronologically, beginning with the energetic pedaling of Bike ride and ending with the bittersweet festivity of Happy birthday! Thus, as the child grows and his or her understanding of reality becomes more acute, so the psychological and technical aspects of each individual piece’s musical language become more complex.
