Cello Sonata, op. 6
Sonata for Cello and Piano, in C sharp minor, is composed from June to July 2007,
and is my first attempt on standard forms of music. Like a standard classical sonata,
the piece has three movements. Stylistically the piece is reminiscent of the late
classical and early romantic periods.
The first movement is in sonata form. It starts with a passionate theme, and soon
modulates to the relative major, E major with a calmer theme. The music then
explores through different keys, making use of previous themes, before returning to
the first theme. The second theme repeats in minor key. A fiery expression of passion
ends the movement.
The second movement is in F sharp major, and is in tertiary form. The movement is
calm and lyrical throughout.
The third movement returns to the home key of the piece, C sharp minor, and is lively
2-beat dance in rondo form. The main theme is fiery in mood, interrupted by a calmer
episode in A major. The second episode is in F sharp major, and the lyrical melody on
the cello is accompanied by arpeggios on the piano. A coda based on a rising minor
triad ends the whole sonata.
