Johann Sebastian Bach's cycle of three sonatas and three partitas for unaccompanied violin represents an uncontested point of culmination in western music for the violin. The pieces set new standards both in instrumental performance and compositional technique - standards that have lost none of their currency over the years.

  • February 17, 2014 Great, but not the best

This has been the standard urtext editions of these great works by Bach for the solo violin. It is a great edition--it has meticulous editing, free of bowing and fingering markings, and beautiful engraving. But its page layout is not optimized, requiring awkward page turns, even for some of...

the shorter movements. For similarly authoritative and beautifully edited edition with much better page turns (with fold outs!) I would recommend Wiener Urtext's recent edition of this work.

  • June 25, 2008 A distinguished edition

The Berenreiter Edition of the 3 Sonatas and 3 Partitas BWV 1001-1006 is a model of clarity, suitable font, and stimulus for creative thought re fingering and bow position. This is a distinguished edition in many ways and will long serve the violinist.

  • March 27, 2008 Good version

This version has no preprinted notes for the violin which allow you to change more than one time "fingers number" without making you sheet unreadable.

  • September 17, 2007 What Bach actually wrote

I was looking for an Urtext edition of these master works. They are what Bach actually wrote (or at least he saw written) and they provide an insight on the phrasing intentions instead of the bowing as it is seen nowadays. Knowing what the phrasing is, I decide the best...

bowing. The page distribution could have been planned better, so that you do not have to change pages in the midlle of a piece.
