Published by Francis Kayali (A0.973021).The piece explores a variety of attacks and melodic ideas throughout the clarinet’s registers. It also reflects my interest in polystylism, echoing Mahler, Sidney Bechet, and Debussy in turn. Doing away with barlines was likely inspired by Varèse’s "Density 21.5" and Satie’s Gymnopédies, which are similarly devoid of barlines. By emulating these pieces, I wanted to set up a free, meditative atmosphere. The length of the breaks between phrases, in particular, is intended to be relatively free. Throughout this study, each new phrase is liable to be at a different tempo, in a different key, and to evoke a different style of music and a different mood than the preceding one.
