Volkmar Andreae, longtime chief conductor of the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra, composed the Piano Concerto in
D during his studies in Cologne where he premiered it himself in 1898. He dedicated the concerto to the Peruvianborn
Swiss pianist and composer Victor Staub, who was teaching at the Cologne Conservatory at the time.
