When Love is Kind has Irish roots. The lyrics of the song were written by Thomas Moore(1779-1852), the best-known Irish poet of his day. Flow Gently, Sweet Afton comes from the Scottish heritage. The poet laureate of Scotland, Robert Burns (1759-1786) wrote the poem, which was not set to music until 1897 (by Jonathan Spilman).
