Mark Lowry and Buddy Greene have created what has quickly become a contemporary, Christmas classic. Recorded by popular artists from Clay Aiken to Pentatonix, this compelling song remains at the top of the charts around the world.
In this piano arrangement, I’ve tried to capture that mysterious contemplation the lyricists have so successfully communicated. Of course, the minor tonality helps to create the mood, but I’ve also tried to paint the image of a young mother gently rocking her newborn infant. Don’t rush or overpower the simplicity of the gentle melody.
As an arranger, I couldn’t ignore the emphatic statement that concludes the piece - "This sleeping Child You’re holding / Is the great I AM." A fiery, double-octave finale punctuates this great realization and gives the arrangement a virtuosic finish.
