This is a quiet setting of the familiar Christmas Carol. The solo violin "sings" the melody over a richly textured accompaniment by strings and harp. The middle section is a more poignant exploration of the harmonic potential of the piece, and the third section features the melody in unison violas and cellos with the solo violin "singing" a descant while the upper strings sustain the harmony.
