The title SONATINA D’AMORE tells it all. This brief 3-movement suite resembles a classical sonatina in form and lightness, while d’amore expresses the music’s gentle warmth, often resembling an operatic love scene. SONATINA D’AMORE is equally suitable for social duet playing as well as for recitals.
Sonatina d’Amore began as a simpler set of short duets for recorders, which later was developed for a commission from Susan Nigro and Burl Lane (The Two Contras) for their Crystal CD of contrabassoon duets, and I gave the piece an Italian title in Sue’s honor. There’s a play on words as some low instruments have amore in their names, like Oboe d’Amore. My love for the sound quality of low winds was also part of the amore, and this transcription for bass clarinet (my “native instrument”) makes the title even more fitting. The music itself is a further amore, as the relationship between the instruments is often like an operatic love duet with flirtatious counterpoint and resolved parallel thirds. This adaptation for deep clarinets was created for the Morii Duo (Lindsey Hutchinson and Rick Ferrarelli) as extra repertoire while I was composing Cosmic Menagerie.
