This is one of the popular pieces from a duet collection arranged by the German composer Brahms, based on Gypsy music. This arrangement of the duet is made easier and more playable than the original. In the Primo part, keep the phrases smooth, and play with articulated rhythms to give it a crisp, lively feel. The Secondo part should firmly support the tempo. For the left-hand's bass notes, playing the quarter notes evenly will help stabilize the performance. The right hand should be light and articulate to feel the changes in harmony for a more colorful rendition. There are three places with "poco rit." in the latter half of the piece where both players need to synchronize the rhythm, and it's better to play those parts slower than before with the feel of "meno mosso" to keep the overall flow uninterrupted. Brahms, who was also active as a pianist, created this Hungarian Dance collection for piano duets and later arranged it for orchestra, and performed widely. It is helpful to compare listening to the original and arranged Hungarian Dances when performing them.
