Program Notes

Nun Komm der Heiden Heiland (Now Come, Saviour of the Gestlies) BWV 659 is a chorale prelude by Johann Sebastian Bach. It was composed in 1724 and is one of the most well-known and frequently performed of Bach's works. The prelude is part of the Neumeister Collection and was composed for organ.   Nun Komm der Heiden Heiland focuses on the Latin text of a Martin Luther hymn of the same name which is based on a verse from the Book of Revelation. The prelude is a meditation in three parts. The first part is a slow chorale with a gentle melody interrupted by fermatas, while the second part is in a lively 6/4 meter and features a flowing accompaniment. The third part is a recapitulation of the themes presented in the first two parts.   This is a typical example of Bach's artistry, combining elements of Lutheran hymnody with complex polyphonic writing. The piece evokes a sense of spiritual devotion through its emotional and harmonic phrasing. Nun Komm der Heiden Heiland is a powerful work which expresses the joy found in the coming of God's kingdom.
