Virgil recounts the story of Nisus and Euryale in Book IX of the Aeneid. A classic tale in the warrior/lover tradition, Nisus and Euryale meet as victors of a footrace, and kill lots of people together in battle. When Euryale, the younger, falls behind and is killed, Nisus sacrifices himself to venge Euryale, and dies on the bleeding bosom of his slain lover. This piece is conceived of as a ballet. Their deaths are each marked by the sound of the large tam-tam.
