By John Coltrane. By John Coltrane. Arranged by Will Rowsell. This edition: audio, pdf, streaming. Jazz. Score. 2 pages. Will Rowsell #1139539. Published by Will Rowsell (A0.1567433).
This is my arrangement of Naima written by John Coltrane in 1959 and dedicated to his then-wife, Juanita Naima Grubbs
It has a 20 bar AABA structure with the first A being 4 bars long and repeated twice for 8 bars. The B section
is 8 bars long and the final A section is again 4 bars.
It has an unusual set of chord changes. An Eb pedal note is played underneath a set of major and minor seven chords for the A section. As this song has been played in many different ways and is unique in it's harmony, many people disagree on how to play it. The A major 7 and G major 7 chords could include the #11 extension if you like here.
A Bb pedal note is sustained for the B section while the chords shift between B major and Bb altered dominant chords. The final chord of the B section here is Eb7sus/Bb while it could also be played as Emaj7#11/Bb.
