‘El Sombrero de Tres Picos’ is a ballet premiered in 1919, and composed of spirited Spanish music. In this work, de Falla composes in the traditional Andalusian folk style, with passionate rhythmic drive being a key element in creating tension and drama.
The Miller’s Dance is a Farruca, a form of flamenco music. It is a light form typical of cante chico, and is traditionally danced only by men. Tension, mystery and contrast are the main characteristics of this dance, with fortissimo interjections interspersed with light, airy melodies in the tenor register.
This arrangement was created by Gillian Horn for the Genovia Quartet in 2018, and first performed at the International Double Reed Society Conference in Granada (the home city of the composer) that same year. I hope you enjoy this fantastic, dramatic piece!
