A melancholy ballad for Bb clarinet and piano, this 6.00 minute piece provides space for the player and audience alike to consider the transition between day and night. This is the second of three movements (from "Night Music: A Suite for Bb Clarinet and Piano), but can be played as a singular piece. This piece uses extended harmonies in the piano to ripple and eddy around the longer notes of the clarinet. A contrasting blues theme is followed by a return of the opening musical ideas. A detour through descending 7th chords meanders back to a quiet final return of the opening.
