Published by Nancy DeVries (A0.964560).De Profundis/Lux Aeterna is a piano interpretation of Psalm 130 (Out of the Depths) which is a penitential psalm also known as a prayer for the Holy Souls in Purgatory. The dark and somber quality of the first theme contrasts with the luminosity and serenity of the second theme, "Lux Aeterna", which is a chanted prayer taken from the traditional Gregorian Requiem Mass. The plea to the Lord for light to shine upon the suffering souls eventually overcomes and triumphs over the depths of darkness as the souls are transported by our prayers to the eternal bliss of Heaven. This meditative and uplifting work may be suitable for use in churches, particularly for All Soul's Day, Lent, or funerals. Suitable also for recital programs or home use. Advanced Intermediate level: some challenges from accidentals and changes in meter, but overall not too difficult. This is a piece that will be enhanced by careful and heartfelt interpretation.
