Performance notes:
This work should be approachable by performers of late intermediate/early advanced skills, and is ideal for concerts, recitals, church special music, or even for personal enjoyment.
Like many of my other works, the focus of this piece is nuance. In and of itself it is not particularly very difficult, but the nuances give color and tell a story. For example see measure 28 where the right hand has the melody, then compare it to a similar measure in 42 where the right hand must be played quietly in order to make the melody in the left hand prominent.
Notice too that at the end of the piece the music introduced by both hands in the beginning is now brought back in the left hand only, with a light ostinato in the right hand.
This is one of the concert pieces I have often played in my "Ancient Voices" piano concerts at the Chautauqua Institute in New York, and is inspired by a church and village in England where I had performed one of my concerts for pipe organ.
Program notes:
Dallinghoo is a small village in Suffolk, England. The name "Dallinghoo" comes from two words: "Dallinga" (the people of Dealla, an ancient tribal leader) and "hoh" or "hoo" which means hill or spur of land. Thus, the hill of the Dallingas. This piano work gives the imagery of stars coming out at night, soon to be accompanied by energetic dances by firelight; firelight that sparks up towards the sky and the quiet of ... the stars.
