The text for this motet comes from the Nicene Creed: "Crucifixus etiam pro nobis sub Pontio Pilato; passus et sepultus est." Glenn Wonacott has mastered the contrapuntal style of the late Renaissance / early Baroque period. Reminiscent of the music of Antonio Lotti, this motet uses chromatic quarter notes and eighth notes to capture the mood inherent in the words, "He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, suffered death and was buried." Unlike most Reniassance motets, dynamics are expressly indicated in this piece, ranging from piano to fortissimo, and underpinning the drama of the subject. The scoring is for SATB choir, a cappella. As with all unaccompanied music that CNP publishes, we provide a piano reduction for rehearsal use. This motet is highly recommended for use on Good Friday, where its text and a cappella voicing make it ideal. It can also be sung throughout Lent, and perhaps for a Tenebrae service during Holy Week as well. Learn it early in Lent and sing it often!
