Psalm 25 (Advent) "To you, O Lord..." / 2. Psalm 98 (Christmas) "All the ends of the earth..." / 3. Psalm 72 (Epiphany) "Lord, every nation on earth..." / 4. Psalm 51 (Lent) "Be merciful, O Lord..." / 5. Psalm 118 (Easter) "This is the day the Lord has made..." / 6. Psalm 104 (Pentecost) "Lord, send out your Spirit..." / 7. Psalm 19 (Ordinary Time) "Lord, you have the words..." / 8. Psalm 95 (Ordinary Time) "If today you hear his voice..." / 9. Psalm 122 (Last Weeks in Ordinary Time) "Let us go with rejoicing..." // As the title indicates, these refrains are simple enough for school children to sing well, but the settings are also worthy of use in the parish. The verses could easily be handled by a school choir or a cantor, and the organ accompaniment is simple and subtle. Not only will this volume of Common Responsorial Psalms be useful for parishes who want to standardize congregational music throughout a season, but the psalms can also be good replacements for those times when a "suggested" psalm setting from the worship-aid collection falls short of the mark in terms of quality. Further, it would do us well as competent church musicians, to break the habit of using psalms only after the first reading. Psalms have a long and rich tradition of use at processional moments - why not use some of these settings as an Entrance Song, at the Offertory (instead of a full-fledged, attention-grabbing hymn), or as music during the Communion Procession?
