Using the refrain "With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption," Psalm 130 is a Common Responsorial Psalm for the Lenten season. Verses speaking of our sinfulness and the forgiveness and mercy of the Lord make this an ideal psalm for use on any (or all) of the Sundays of Lent, as well as for Penitential Services or Vespers during the season. This setting uses flute obbligato for introduction, verses and final refrain. Two chant-like melodies are found concurrently in the accompaniment; eighth against quarter note motion emphasizes the pleading nature of the text. The modality alternates between d minor (natural) and Dorian mode, adding to the Medieval flavor of the piece.
