So many unusual circumnstances to take in and somehow navigate as individuals, a society and a people. The title refers to the end of the year, we are closing this chapter. It is in fact December 18th, 2020 as I write this. The instability and desire for certainty in the piece are very much intended. It is an emotional and searching work that hopefully captures what I, at least, have been feeling for much of the year of loss and reinvention. That my mother commissioned this piece is a tribute to her belief in me, her desire to support me as an artist, her need for something to work on as a pianist and her curiosity. The subtitle, "Mom's notes" is a shared secret between us.
