Composed by Art Garfunkel, Larry Knechtel, and Paul Simon. Arranged by Paul Magee. Pop,Rock. Score. 7 pages. Paul Magee #3885145. Published by Paul Magee (A0.896444).

'Bridge Over Troubled Water', by Simon and Garfunkel, is one of the greatest recordings ever produced. The careful articulation of Art Garfunkel's voice is matched beautifully in the opening two verses by a skilled Grammy Award winning piano accompaniment by session musician, Larry Knechtel.

Subsequent recordings and concert performances fail to capture the same original piano sound since Knechtel's piano part is rarely ever analyzed music theoretically to reproduce it. So here it is. The piano accompaniment on the original recording has been analyzed and reproduced music theoretically for repeat performances true to the original.

Subsequent to the success of Bridge Over Troubled Water after its release, Knechtel himself always said that when he was asked to play the accompaniment to the song at concerts, he was invariably asked to play it exactly as he had done in the studio on the original track, but as a brilliant improvisor foremost, his response was always that he didn't know how to recreate the original performance, and that he could only elaborate upon the chord progressions. So here it is, as near as I can tell, exactly how Knechtel played it during that famous session in about 1969.

My decision to arrange it came about after purchasing one of the official Simon and Garfunkel songbooks which left me feeling rather disappointed, because although the arranger had chosen the correct key of E flat major, he or she had gotten off to a terrible start by writing the opening bass note of the first chord in measure one as E flat, which not only sounds wrong but is wrong, becasue on the original recording Knechtel definitely plays the second inversion of the E flat chord i.e. B flat, E flat, G and B flat.
