Bastien Refreshed!
Bastien has been a tried and true method and the New Traditions series is a welcome update. My students aged six through 11 find it engaging and challenging, yet attainable. The pacing is logical. My students love the innovative accompaniments provided for me to play. The artwork is much improved - colorful yet not overly youthful. My new go-to for elementary students.

Love Bastien but not this
I use Bastien piano method exclusively the first years for young students but this All-In-One is a mess. The progression is choppy and the songs are TERRIBLE. I will stick with tried and true Piano-Technic-Theory in separate books. It is surprising that this is such a departure from the quality of Bastien's regular series.

Improved over the original, good Bastien books
Bastien has this new program, the New Traditions All-In-One book, which came out in 2016. Love it! It fixes the issues with the older series.Pros with New Traditions:1) Now you just progress through this one book without having to switch books and figure out what page in Theory goes with what page in Piano and what page in Performance.2) There is also some overlap between the old primer level and the New Traditions Level 1A.3) The new book introduces new key fingerings more gradually than the old series, so it's very gentle in this way.4) We also enjoy the new songs, as pretty much all of the songs are new and different from the old set, even though there is some overlap in the skill set between old primer and new level 1A programs.5) There are thematic-sounding songs, one sounds middle-eastern, another sounds native American, and so on.6) The updated illustrations and art are nicely done; much better than the old books.Cons:I can't think of any! It's a great program!
