Bastien New Traditions Primer A
I have mostly used the Faber method books for my beginning students, but decided to use this for an 8-year old beginner with special needs, who had some exposure to the piano with a previous teacher (but needed correction with bad habits). He needs a lot of reinforcement and I knew he would need a slower paced book. While I do like the idea of an all-in-one book, there were some concepts that I thought could have been introduced later (skips, mf/mp, half rests and whole rests, 2/4, etc.). I can see how there is a lot to digest even though the book stays in pre-staff notation.

Bastien New Traditions
I have had a blast teaching out of the new Bastien series. My students have enjoyed the pace of the books and it is incredibly helpful to use books that the students can use on their own without their parents' help. As a teacher, I enjoy the beautiful duets that accompany many of the pieces and, visually the books are stunning with the impressive watercolors. The All-In-One concept is helpful for students to focus on one book at a time even though the book covers theory, performance, and technique in a cohesive way. I highly recommend this book for any teachers that want to give their students a motivating path to learning foundational skills independently from their parents.

Nice!
Despite what other reviewers are saying, I actually like the speed at which things are introduced in this book. Some students need a slower pace, and this is a perfect book for that. I start students in Book A, and once I feel they're ready to move on to the staff, we switch to Book B. It's really up to you, as the teacher, when you want to move on to the next book. For students who are struggling and need a slower pace, simply keep them in Book A until you feel that they are ready to move onto Book B. For students who seem to be grasping everything quickly, switch them to Book B.

Great for Young Beginners!
The first time I read through this book, I, too, did not think that this was a great book. But after a four yr old student was able to easily grasp a lot of the basic concepts that the book tried to teach, my perception changed.I gave the Primer A book to a four yr old student two weeks before her first lesson. Surprisingly as I started to go through the first few pages with her during our first class, I found that she completed an assignment of tracing & drawing half & quarter notes on her own since her parents did not go through any of the content with her. Although she can hardly read at age four, she understood a lot of the concepts that the book was trying to teach on her own. Due to all the colorful & easy to understand illustrations, this four yr old student understood exactly which fingers & hands to use & hit the correct keys that the book asked her to play. We easily went through the first 14 pages with minimal guidance from me.

The old version moved more quickly
I am not too thrilled with this new version, and unfortunately, there were no review online prior to me purchasing about $200 worth of these books for my piano studio. I've only gotten through the first part of Primer A and it moves so slowly, spending forever on the black keys, and even introduces quarter rests as a theory lesson, but never applies them to the song. The positives are that the graphics looks nicer and they do cover a broader range or registers on the black keys) though I think that actually adds to confusion for the beginner. The old version was so much better. I wish I had known.

Truly disapointed...
I was incredibly excited about this book when I first heard about it as I'm a huge fan of the Bastien programs. However, after reviewing Primer A, I would never buy or recommend this program to my students. For starters, the pacing is incredibly slow. Painfully so with very little for students to do on the actual piano. It is more busy work, and what piano playing is available is dumbed down. There is no reason a primer student should still be playing black notes months after starting lessons. Additionally, the book recommends starting pedal work. I have a large studio, and none of my primer students can reach the pedals without using a pedal extender, and even then, this is not authentic practice as even if I have one in the studio, they won't have one at home to practice with. Why in the world would anyone recommend pedal work to children who can't reach? Save your money and invest in their other programs. Give this one a pass.
