Soprano voice solo or unison choir and organ accompaniment

SKU: C5.8015

Composed by Calvert Shenk. Equally suited for soprano soloist or a unison choir - even a children's choir - this mildly chromatic setting of the Marian text for compline would make an appropriate solo during Lent, perhaps at the end of Communion time, or even more dramatically, as. Marian, Lent. Published by CanticaNOVA Publications (C5.8015).

Text source: Liturgy.

The Marian antiphon "Ave Regina cælorum," is one of four concluding antiphons for Compline. It is generally used from February 2 (The Feast of the Presentation) through Wednesday of Holy Week. This beautiful piece was written by the prominent late 20th century American Catholic composer, Calvert Shenk. Its minor mode setting is for soprano soloist, though it can also be sung by a unison children's choir. The vocal range runs from first-line E to the G above the treble staff. This solo/motet is written in Shenk's mildly chromatic style, beginning in b minor, with a coda that reiterates the first phrase, "Ave Regina cælorum" twice, ending on B Major. It would make an appropriate solo during Lent, perhaps at the end of Communion time, or even more dramatically, as a calm choral piece at the end of each Lenten Sunday's Mass. The translation of text is as follows: "Hail, O Queen of Heaven. Hail, O Lady of Angels. Hail! thou root, hail! thou gate from whom unto the world, a light has arisen: Rejoice, O glorious Virgin, lovely beyond all others, Farewell, most beautiful maiden, and pray for us to Christ.".
