Two Choruses from the Opera ANUSH - "Ambi Dagitz" (From Under the Cloud) and "Hampartzoom Yayla" (Feast Day). Composer: Armen Tigranian (1879-1950). Arranged for Intermediate Piano Solo.

Armen Tigranian (or Tigranyan), born in 1879, based his opera on the poem Anush by Hovhannes Toumanian (1869-1923). The poem was published in 1892. The opera premiered in 1912 and was groundbreaking in setting an Armenian national operatic genre. While the music is reminiscent of Armenian folk songs, it is original to Tigranian. The story of the village girl, Anush, and her beloved Saro, a herdsman, ends in tragedy, precipitated by Saro’s poor judgment in physically engaging with Anush’s brother, Mosi. The physical backdrop of nature highlighting the mountains, flowers, and bodies of water, is juxtaposed with the Armenian village traditions and celebrations.
