The great Baroque master composer Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) wrote music for every combination of instruments and voices. His simplest and purest work are four-part chorale compositions and settings, so perfectly constructed that they evoke meditative spirituality. “Figured bass” was a Baroque system of notating harmony. In addition 371 chorales, this collection includes 69 melodies with figured bass. This classic Schirmer edition, edited by Albert Riemenschneider, has sold over 1,000,000 copies since its release in the early 20th century. Primarily for keyboard, the chorales can also be played by other instruments.

You get what you pay for
As with all Schirmer editions you very much get what you pay for. It is remarkably affordable and inclusive in its contents yet at the cost of quality. The printing is better here than in other Schirmer's I have with fewer patches that haven't quite had enough ink, the paper is the same old cheap thin blinding white, the binding is fairly usable, it won't lie flat but it will stay open well enough. The engraving is so-so, they've fit a lot in this volume so everything is very small. The indeces are quite nice, offering insight into each chorale and melody. The cover I was quite excited about as it a different image to the yellow and green usually found on Schirmer editions however mine was printed so crooked that the fron cover is falling off of one side and quite far from the other (not centred as pictured). Oddly, (despite having more that enough room at over 1cm thick) there appears to be nothing on the spine either, which could make it quite difficult to locate within a bookshelf.
