About Aram Ilyich Khachaturian

(1903-1978) 20th Century music - Armenia

Khachaturian had very little musical knowledge when he enrolled at the Gnessin Musical Institute in Moscow in 1922. He later completed his studies and pursued a graduate degree at the Moscow Conservatory. His first major work was the Piano Concerto of 1936, which earned him recognition worldwide. He also wrote a popular Violin Concerto and Cello Concerto. Other notable orchestral music includes three symphonies, the ballet music Gayane and Spartacus, and 25 film scores. Khachaturian followed Russian musical traditions, but used Armenian, Caucasian, Eastern European and Middle Eastern folk music in his works. Not only was he one of the most important Soviet composers of the 20th century, he is the only Armenian composer to ever achieve international fame.
