The cycle of love songs called Cypresses, which Dvorak composed in his youth, were re-written for string quartet many years later. In this way, a suite of twelve short quartet pieces, full of intimate lyricism, came into being. The pieces were published first after the composer's death and the critical edition of the parts for this composition appeared in print in the 80s of the 20th century.

These love songs by Dvorak are romantic, sentimental, and quite lovely. They do not require fast fingers, but demand expressive, responsive playing.
