This is a delightful setting of a Japanese children's song by popular composer Larry Clark. Clark does it again with flowing lines and atmospheric harmonies. This is a perfect piece with which to introduce a new culture to your ensemble.
Zou-san (Little Elephant) is a Japanese children's song. It is a delightful little tune using the pentatonic scale. In this arrangement I have taken certain liberties with the form of the original folk song. The original song can be heard in the first violin in mm. 5-8 and then again in mm. 33-36. This melody is a very short eight-measure phrase. It has been elongated in this arrangement to give the piece two separate sections or themes, which are developed throughout the work. It was the intent to depict musically the gentle beauty of a baby elephant, but with a little bit of the lumbering nature of this majestic animal. Also, as the lyrics suggest, there is a loving connection to the mother that was considered when writing this piece. The Japanese lyrics and the English translations are included here for your reference.
