The song tells of a young woman's remembrance of her delight as a young girl in the the green groves, but now there are only sad, sad, times. Her mood becomes brighter as she holds an embroidered handkerchief wrapped around a sprig of rosemary (the symbol of remembrance) given her by her darling for her delight. .
